Contents | The action of a group on a set. Orbits and stabilizers. Burnside and Cauchy-Frobenius formulas. Sylow theory. Finitely generated and finitely cogenerated abelian groups. Linear representations of groups. Permutation representations. Equivalent representations. Modules: homomorphisms, free modules and vector spaces. Semisimple modules and rings. Weddeburn-Artin theorem. Group algebra. Classification of representations. Schur lemma. Irreducible representations of abelian groups. Maschke’s theorem and its applications. The structure of group algebra. Introduction to characters of finite groups. The Burnside’s solubility criterion. |

Course objectives | The aim is to introduce the basic of permutational and linear representations of groups with applications to Sylow theory and soluble groups. |
Prerequisites | It is assumed the knowledge of the basic group theory and linear algebra. |
