DTSTAMP:20231011T064336Z
DESCRIPTION:AVVISO DI SEMINARIO

A Steiner triple system (STS) is a set S together with a collection B of subsets of S of size 3 such that any two elements of S belong to exactly one element of B. Recently, the infinite counterparts of these structures have proven interesting from a model theoretic viewpoint. We will survey recent results in the area, and introduce current work on free constructions of Steiner systems \N                                                                                                \N Le proponenti \NPaola D’Aquino e Anna De Mase  \N(responsabile: Anna De Mase)  \N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N

SUMMARY:Seminario di Analisi matematica "Sharp estimates for the first Robin and Robin-Neumann eigenvalues of elliptic operators"
DTSTAMP:20231011T064010Z
DESCRIPTION:\NIl seminario di Analisi matematica all’Università “L. Vanvitelli” \N\Norganizzato da \NBiagio Cassano, Emma D'Aniello, Giuseppina di Blasio, Adele Ferone, Antonio Gaudiello, Martina Maiuriello, Benedetta Pellacci e Giovanni Pisante. \N\N                                                      ___________________________ \N\N\NMartedì 24 Ottobre, dalle ore 14:30 alle ore 15:30, nella saletta seminari del Dipartimento di Matematica e Fisica dell’Università degli Studi della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, via A. Lincoln 5 – Caserta,\Nil prof. Gianpaolo Piscitelli\N(Università degli Studi degli studi di Napoli Parthenope)\N\Nterrà una conferenza dal titolo:\N                   \N"Sharp estimates for the first Robin and Robin-Neumann eigenvalues of elliptic operators"\N\NAbstract \NWe discuss some lower and upper estimates for the first Robin eigenvalue of the p-Laplace operator, where 1p+∞. We found estimates in terms of the first eigenvalue of a one-dimensional nonlinear problem, which depends on the Robin parameter and on geometrical quantities associated to the domain, such as the volume, the perimeter and the inradius. We also discuss these results in the anisotropic setting. Furthermore, we describe the asymptotic behavior of these eigenvalues when p approaches 1.Moreover, in the case of negative Robin boundary parameter, we establish a quantitative version of the isoperimetric inequality of the so-called Neumann-Robin eigenvalue problem; the main novelty consists in the introduction of a new type of hybrid asymmetry, that turns out to be the suitable one to treat the different conditions on the outer and internal boundary. Up to our knowledge, in this context, this is the first stability result in which both the outer and the inner boundary are perturbed. This talk is based on some joint works with R. Barbato (Napoli Federico II), S. Cito (Salento), F. Della Pietra (Napoli Federico II) and G. Paoli (Napoli Federico II & FAU Erlangen).\N\NSarà possibile seguire il seminario anche su Microsoft Teams al seguente link: \N\Nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3a168ba8c448f04e398891ae6f20162356%40thread.tacv2/1696655610917?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%228f547aef-14d7-49ca-a4d4-51a6c5cb92c1%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22bfe1619a-2bf3-4f74-b8e8-271c04767caf%22%7d \N\NLa responsabile \N\NProf.ssa Benedetta Pellacci.

SUMMARY:Seminario:  Research at the Sanford Underground Research Facility
DTSTAMP:20240216T082429Z
DESCRIPTION:AVVISO DI SEMINARIO

\N\N \NMercoledì 21 febbraio 2024, alle ore 14:00, nell’aula F del Dipartimento, il Professore Frank Strieder, della South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, terrà un seminario dal titolo\N\N  Research at the Sanford Underground Research Facility\N \N \NAbstract:\NThe Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) is an international facility dedicated to advancing compelling multidisciplinary underground scientific research, including physics, biology, geology, and engineering. Seven primary underground levels at SURF offer a unique environment that allows researchers the opportunity to explore an array of important science questions. Laboratories have been developed mainly at the 4850-foot level (1500 m, 4300 m.w.e.), where several experiments are well established. SURF is also home to the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) that will host the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). In addition to existing laboratory space, SURF is proposing additional underground excavation on the 4850-level, and initial engineering designs have been completed. This presentation will give an overview of the facility and the major science projects conducted underground while subsequently focusing on Nuclear Astrophysics research at the CASPAR (Compact Accelerator System for Performing Astrophysical Research) laboratory. CASPAR is also located on SURF’s 4850-level and operates a 1-MV fully refurbished Van de Graaff accelerator that can provide high intensity proton and alpha beams. The facility has produced first scientific results but was hibernating for the last almost three years due to the massive excavations for DUNE. CASPAR will be recommissioned soon, and the future program of the project will be discussed.\N                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Il Proponente\NLucio Gialanella  \N

When the dilatation coefficient belongs to the Sobolev class on a bounded domain D with suitable boundary regularity, quantitative Sobolev estimates for the Beltrami resolvent are instead related to weighted Sobolev norms of the compression to D of the Beurling transform. These norms are connected to the boundary regularity of D by a testing type theorem for singular integrals on domains. In this talk, we describe a wavelet representation formula and the ensuing general testing type characterization of the weighted Sobolev space boundedness of singular integrals on domains, which is sharp and, in this generality, new on Euclidean space as well, recovering the Beurling transform result as a very special case. DESCRIPTION:Il seminario di Analisi matematica all’Università “L. Vanvitelli”\Norganizzato da\NBiagio Cassano, Emma D'Aniello, Giuseppina di Blasio, Adele Ferone, Antonio Gaudiello, \NMartina Maiuriello, Benedetta Pellacci e Giovanni Pisante.\N                                                      ___________________________\NMartedì 19 Marzo, dalle ore 14:45 alle ore 15:45, nell’Auletta Seminari del Dipartimento di Matematica e Fisica dell’Università degli Studi della Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, via A. Lincoln 5 – Caserta,\Nil Professor Juan Benigno Seoane Sepúlveda\N(Universidad Complutense de Madrid & Instituto de Matemática Interdisciplinar)\Nterrà una conferenza dal titolo:\N                  \N“Geometry of the unit sphere in polynomial spaces and applications”\NAbstract\NWe shall present a brief (although global) perspective on the geometry of spaces of polynomials. More particularly, we will focus on polynomial spaces of dimension 3, providing, in that case, a graphical representation of the unit ball. Also, the extreme points in the unit ball of several polynomial spaces are characterized. A number of applications to obtain sharp classical polynomial inequalities will be presented as well. \NThis work is partly based on the recent research monograph [1], which is the first ever complete account on the geometry of the unit ball of polynomial spaces. Nowadays there are many research papers on this topic and this work gathers the state of the art of the main and/or relevant results up to now, some of which were originally started by authors such as R. M. Aron, Y. S. Choi, or M. Klimek, among others. We shall also comment on some new results from several ongoing joint works with M. Han, E. D’Aniello, S.K. Kim, M. Maiuriello, and G.A. Muñoz ([2,3]). \N1.     [1] J. Ferrer, D. García, M. Maestre, G.A. Muñoz-Fernández, D.L. Rodríguez-Vidanes, J.B. SUMMARY:Definable henselian valuations in positive residue characteristic
DTSTAMP:20240404T070659Z
DESCRIPTION:AVVISO DI SEMINARIO

\N \NMartedì, 9 aprile 2024, alle ore 14:30, in aula F del Dipartimento, Simone Ramello (University of Muenster, Germany) terrà un seminario dal titolo\N \N \NDefinable henselian valuations in positive residue characteristic\N \N \N \NAbstract: Valuations arise as non-archimedean generalizations of absolute values, with examples coming from all over number theory and algebraic geometry. In many cases, henselian valuations turn out to be definable in the language of rings, a phenomenon famously observed (although perhaps not in these terms) by Julia Robinson in the context of the p-adics. In the late 2010s, Jahnke and Koenigsmann started a classification of when a henselian valuation is definable on a henselian field, providing a full characterization for the case where the so-called canonical henselian valuation has residue characteristic zero. We extend their work to the case where the residue characteristic is positive, drawing on the toolkit of independent defect to summon a definable henselian valuation out of certain defect extensions. This is joint work with Margarete Ketelsen (Münster) and Piotr Szewczyk (Dresden).\N                                          \N                                          Le proponenti\NPaola D’Aquino e Anna De Mase\N(responsabile: Anna De Mase)

SUMMARY:“Torus-like solutions for the Landau de Gennes model”

Lincoln 5 – Caserta,\Nil Professor Adriano Pisante\N(Università di Roma “Sapienza”)\Nterrà una conferenza dal titolo:\N                  \N“Torus-like solutions for the Landau de Gennes model”\NAbstract\NWe report on some recent progress (in collaboration with F. Dipasquale and V.Millot) about the study of global minimizers of a continuum Landau-De Gennes energy functional for nematic liquid crystals in three-dimensional domains. First, we discuss absence of singularities for minimizing configurations under norm constraint, as well as absence of the isotropic phase for the unconstrained minimizers, together with the related biaxial escape phenomenon. Then, under suitable assumptions on the topology of the domain and on the Dirichlet boundary condition, we show that smoothness of energy minimizing configurations yields the emergence of nontrivial topological structure in their biaxiality level sets. Then, we discuss the previous properties under both the norm constraint and an axial symmetry constraint, showing that in this case only partial regularity is available, away from a finite set located on the symmetry axis. In addition, we show that singularities may appear due to energy efficiency and we describe precisely the asymptotic profile around singular points.  Finally, in an appropriate class of domains and boundary data we obtain qualitative properties of the biaxial surfaces, showing that smooth minimizers exibit torus structure, as predicted in numerical simulations. \N Sarà possibile seguire il seminario anche su Microsoft Teams al seguente link:https://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3a168ba8c448f04e398891ae6f20162356%40thread.tacv2/1711466742920?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%228f547aef-14d7-49ca-a4d4-51a6c5cb92c1%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22f3b2709e-67f6-467c-a7f1-03458e167e28%22%7d\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\NJoin conversation\Nteams.microsoft.com\N\N\N\N\N\NIl responsabile,\NDott. SUMMARY:AVVISO DI SEMINARIO : Numerical integration of time-fractional reaction-diffusion equations with applications
DTSTAMP:20240515T071624Z
We consider reaction diffusion problems, where the time derivative is of non-integer order. The fractional derivative in time is able to model the influence of memory in the phenomenon, thus it has a number of applications in various fields, from physics to biology, ecology and so on. We are concerned with numerical solvers, which provide reliable approximate solutions, at a reasonable computational cost, and meanwhile preserve the main features of the model. In particular, we propose a mixed method, based on a spectral method in time and a finite difference scheme in space, which preserves the discrete counterpart of the conservation laws. We also illustrate the derivation of a couple of nonstandard integrators, based on L1 and on GrünwaldLetnikov methods along time, respectively, which preserve the positivity of the solutions. Finally, we discuss a fractional order model of ring formation due to negative plant soil feedback: we examine the analytical properties of the model, then by an extensive numerical illustration, we show the effect of the fractional order derivative in the pattern formation. The presented results have been obtained in collaboration with Zubair Ahmad, Gianluca Frasca Caccia, Francesco Giannino, Beatrice Paternoster and Gerardo Toraldo. I Proponenti Rosanna Campagna, Serena Crisci, Valentina De Simone e Gerardo Toraldo

SUMMARY:Sottospazi invariati negli schemi di Lai-Massey e primitività

DESCRIPTION:\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\N\NAVVISO DI SEMINARIO

SUMMARY:Model Theory meets Statistical Learning
DTSTAMP:20241127T082344Z
DESCRIPTION:AVVISO DI SEMINARIO

This talk aims at developing a learnability framework within a model-theoretic context, thereby building a bridge between Model Theory and Statistical Learning Theory. Specifically, relations between the notions PAC learning, VC dimension, NIP and o-minimality are studied, with a particular emphasis on measurability aspects. \NIn the context of Statistical Learning Theory, the formal model of (agnostic) PAC learning is introduced. Further, the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning is presented, which states that a class of indicator functions is PAC learnable if and only if its VC dimension is finite. The learning model as well as the theorem are scrutinized from a measure-theoretic perspective, in order to extract the minimal measurability requirements needed for rigorous reasoning. \NThen it is explained how we can establish learnability results within a modeltheoretic context, focusing on o-minimal expansions of the reals. In particular, we discuss when the above-mentioned measurability requirements are partly or fully satisfied. \NI report on [Lothar Sebastian Krapp and Laura Wirth, ’Measurability in the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning’, Preprint, 2024, arXiv:2410.10243], which is submitted for publication and is part of my doctoral research project supervised by Professor Salma Kuhlmann and Dr. Lothar Sebastian Krapp at Universitat Konstanz.\N \N                                                                                           Le proponenti\NPaola D'Aquino e Anna De Mase\N(responsabile: Anna De Mase)\N

SUMMARY: “Inverse linear problems, Krylov solvability and perturbations: a bridge between functional and numerical analysis”

Lincoln 5 – Caserta,\N \Nil professore Noè Angelo Caruso\N(Università Link Campus)\N \Nterrà una conferenza dal titolo:\N \N“Inverse linear problems, Krylov solvability and perturbations:\Na bridge between functional and numerical analysis”\N \NAbstract\NIn recent years interest in the properties of Krylov approximations to inverse linear problems has been gaining traction. By inverse linear problems we mean problems the form Af = g where A is an operator on Hilbert space, g is a known datum vector and f is an unknown solution that in practical situations we wish to find. The use of Krylov approximations to inverse linear problems is attractive from a practical standpoint of scientific computing: Krylov algorithms use polynomials p of the operator A, and the vector g, to construct vector approximants p(A)g to a solution f.  Our research focusses on the, until recently, largely unexplored question: under what conditions on the operator or datum vector do `good' approximating polynomials exist? Namely: can one approximate a solution f to Af=g using polynomials p(A)g? In the affermative we say that the linear inverse problem is Krylov solvable. It turns out that determining Krylov solvability for inverse linear problems in infinite dimensional Hilbert space is not at all trivial. This talk focusses on our recent research that aims to address systematically this gap in knowledge through several functional-analytic/operator theoretic means. The tools used include topology, functional analysis and operator theory, and also measure theory, that together highlight the richness in behavior that this problem exhibits. This discussion is based on several published articles in collaboration with Alessandro Michelangeli (University of Bonn, Germany and Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University, Saudi Arabia), as well as our ongoing collaborations with Marko Erceg (University of Zagreb, Croatia).\NSarà possibile seguire il seminario anche su Microsoft Teams al seguente link:\Nhttps://teams.microsoft.com/l/meetup-join/19%3a168ba8c448f04e398891ae6f20162356%40thread.tacv2/1736262217286?context=%7b%22Tid%22%3a%228f547aef-14d7-49ca-a4d4-51a6c5cb92c1%22%2c%22Oid%22%3a%22623441d5-3f84-4b68-a8f1-3b90e97d1b25%22%7d\N \NLa responsabile,\NProf. Giuseppina di Blasio\N
