Contents | Basic elements of Calculus, combinatorial analysis and theory and applications of probabilities: study of sequences of real numbers as well as of real functios of one variable, with special concern to limits, differential calculus and integral calculus; study of the tools to identify and enumerate some distributions of particular subsets of a set. |
Textbook and course materials | P. Marcellini e C. Sbordone, Istituzioni di Matematica, Liguori. |
Course objectives | To give the students at least all the basic tools to quantify, interpret, manage and process the results of experiences, as well as to enable them to conjecture, check and describe in quantitative terms and through formal relations their regularities. |
Prerequisites | A good knowledge of elementary Algebra, Geometry and trigonometry. |
Teaching methods | The course consists in 96 hours of lectures carried out by the teacher in which will be described the theory, applied to different examples and to the resolution of exercises. During its individual work, the student must to assimilate knowledge and basic concepts of mathematics and solve exercises. The course also includes the application of the topics presented through classroom exercises on the topics covered and under the supervision of the teacher or a tutor. Students have opportunities to ask explanations or to correct their homework exercises during the office hours indicated by the teacher in the timetable. |
Evaluation methods | The exam consists in passing, with a vote of at least 16/30, a written test, lasting 120 minutes, where the student must perform four exercises, consisting of a function study, a limit, a integral and a probability calculation exercise. Passing the written test is a prerequisite for the oral examination. During the course the students are given exercises to do at home, with correction in the classroom by the teacher, in order to establish the difficulties encountered by the students before the written test. The oral exam is aimed at evaluating the reasoning and connection skills between the various topics of the course and consists of questions aimed at verifying the knowledge of theorems and definitions. The final evaluation will be expressed in thirtieths and will take into account the outcome of the oral test and the written test. |
Other information | The teacher is available to receive students on the basis of the timetable and by e-mail. |
Course Syllabus | PREMISES - Elements of set theory: operations between sets and functions. Natural, integer and rational numbers. Real numbers. Absolute value function and property. Maximum and minimum; upper and lower extremity. Elementary functions: power, root, exponential, logarithm and trigonometric functions. Determination of definition sets. Topology of the real line: intervals, surroundings and accumulation points. |
