    Contenuti

    criticamente i risultati.

    Prerequisiti

    Contents

The course discusses some basic issues of the incompressible fluid mechanics,
with particular reference to the flow about bodies and to the boundary layer.
The relation between the vorticity dynamics in the field and the force and
the moment acting on the body is deeply investigated, leading to simple
explanations of the drag and of the aerodynamic lift.
The boundary layer is studied in the framework of the classical theory
    of singular perturbations.
A short view to the compressible fluid dynamics is finally aimed at the
study of the propulsive nozzle of a jet engine.

    Course objectives

The subject of the course is the study of some classical problems of the Fluid
Mechanics and of the corresponding mathematical models classically used for
    their handling.
The student is asked for knowing the main features of some relevant kinds of
flows and the mathematical approaches needed for their quantitative handling.
Moreover, he has to understand and to explain the results of analytical and/or
numerical calculations of the flow fields.
The main goal of the course consists in enabling the student to use the
    mathematical models for investigating sample-flows.
Moreover, the student has to become able to build the numerical codes needed
during his investigations and also to evaluate the reliability of the obtained
    results.

At the end of the course, the student will be able to discuss the main features
of some sample-flows, to choice the mathematical models for investigating them
and to provide reliable quantitative results.

    Prerequisites

Basic knowledges of Physics and of Calculus are required.
In particular, the student shold know the ordinary differential equations,
Green's formulae and something about the partial differential equations.

    Teaching methods

The course consists in 5 cfu (40 hours) of lectures and 3 cfu (24 hours) of
    exercises.
A large part of these latter will be held in the computer room.
The lessons and the exercises are in presence, with the aim to simplify
the approach of the student to new arguments and computer tools.

    Assessment methods

The examination consists in giving an exercise and a certain time to do this
    (few weeks).
After that, the exercise will be discussed together and its results evaluated.
The quality of the report made by the student as well as the presentation
of the results are also evaluated, in order to prepare the student to his
    professional life.

    Other information

Notes by the teacher and numerical codes are available.
    There are no slides.
The student should use a computer with a unix operative system,
as Ubuntu, in order to simplify the exercises and to employ free codes
(as the fortran compiler and graphical tools).
