    The degree in details

    The idea of a Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, in the L41-Statistics class, was born from the need of filling the gap in the national education programs for a growing sector that is asking to satisfy skills for educating people to become one of the most professional figure known as Data Analyst (a short webinar in Italian about the job of a data analyst is here).

    Indeed, in the Big Data age, there is a growing and growing demand by organizations (e.g. companies, banks, insurance firms, research centers) for Data Analysts capable of mastering and analyzing the information deluge and the big volume of data that is now ubiquitous in various economic, social and scientific related application fields. This is now possible thanks to the availability of new storage and computational resources that manage the immense flows of data produced by the web, social networks and media, sensor networks, smart meters and other sources.

Knowing how data are collected, codified, processed, stored and released, linked, and how they can be selected and analyzed to extract high value-added knowledge are the main skills needed to profitably tackle the next challenges in the information society.

    The Bachelor's degree program

    The Bachelor's degree belongs to L-41 Statistics class.
    Although the L41-class is a traditional degree program in Statistics, it allows to organize degree programs that provide for an adequate education in quantitative and applied computer science related disciplines.
    In a contextual strategy, the degree proposed by the Department of Mathematics and Physics is able to meet the aims of the offered courses with a program that is mainly oriented to the development of an applied analyst as a job-ready graduate, or at giving our graduates the possibility to access master's programs in Computer Science, Economics, Statistics, or, of course, Data Science.

    Educational and cultural objectives

    The Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics is mainly focused on teaching methods and techniques in the area of maths (analysis and calculus), inferential statistics and exploratory data analysis, computer science methods and tools for database design and management, fundamentals of programming, basics of epistemology for the research, econometric, experimental and dynamic models. The graduate will gain knowledge and skills from different fields that will give him/her a broad and analytic vision on the tools for the management, process and presentation of insights from data, in a strongly interdisciplinary and integrated context. Besides learning technical skills, the graduate will be able to use such tools in different application fields such as the economic-financial, social, demographic, biomedical, environmental and energy sectors. Additionaly, during the program, the student in Data Analytics is trained to design and analyze real data intensive practical case studies during stage periods in external organizations.

    Besides some classical courses, the innovation in our program is in including, together with traditional courses:
    - learning of the principal statistical and data mining software (SAS Miner, or the open-source Weka, R, Python) through practical classes in computer labs with experts trainers;
    - the solution of practical problems and case studies based on data coming from databases of companies (for example, from TLC or IT companies) or public institutions (e.g. Istat, Inps).

    The specific skills acquired by the graduates in Data Analytics are the following:
    • statistical and computational skills for the processing and the analysis of high dimensional, or complex data coming fom different and unstructured souces; high throughput data (for example, from sensors of financial markets);
    • knowledge of statistical methodologies, Data Mining and optimization techniques for the solution of complex problems and enforcement capacity in real scenarios;
    • experience in analysis of relational Big Data from the Web and knowledge of Social Network Analysis;
    • technical skills of prediction and monitoring of evolutionary phenomena;
    • use of statistical software and specific programming languages such as R and Python;
    • knowledge of database management systems and distributed computing ones, also in a cloud environment;
    • communication of the analysis results skills by presentations and reports with visualization analytics tools.

    An international program

    The choice for an English denomination of the course is primarily due to its relation with a new discipline that is gaining increasing popularity on the international level and its main professional figure, known as Data Analysts. A second motivation is due to the will for an international recognition of the degree by:
    - teaching lectures in English language and
    - giving a double degree, in partnership with a foreign university.
    All that is related to teaching activities is in English: taught classes, practical classes, books and teaching materials.

    About the double-degree, the University Paris 13 – Université Sorbonne Paris Cité (France) agreed to participate as partner of the program.
    Finally, the University Caddi Ayyad di Marrakech (Morocco), one of the most important university of the Morocco, showed a strong interest to become partner of the program.
